Curriculum Guide for Teachers

The National Liberty Ship Memorial works to promote and operate the SS Jeremiah O’Brien as a living museum. An important part of this work is to preserve, for present and future generations, the story of the patriotic and brave American men and women who built, sailed, and defended the 2,710 World War II ships known as “Liberties.”

As part of this effort, we are offering a curriculum developed by the UC Berkeley History-Social Science Project for 11th grade high school teachers. The curriculum is designed for students studying World War II history. This curriculum guide, free to any California high school teacher, is designed to meet California State History – Social Science Content Standards. The guide is easily downloaded at the link below. After completing the curriculum, we welcome students and teachers to visit the SS Jeremiah O’Brien at Pier 45 on San Francisco Fisherman’s Wharf. Please call the office at 415-544-0100 to make arrangements in advance of your visit.

The National Liberty Ship Memorial would also like to recommend a book called, The Battle of the Atlantic: How the Allies Won the War by Jonathan Dimbleby. A review of the book can be found here.
